Whereas some renowned boxers who are left-handers fight almost the all the time in the orthodox stance – such as Miguel Cotto and Oscar de la Hoya– Alberto is exactly the opposite, being a natural right-hander who fights in the southpaw stance, just like former Puerto Rico champion Iván ‘ElNene’ Calderón.
“When I started boxing at the age of 10 in the Monte Hatillo Gymnasium with Canito Marrero,” remembers the 19-year-old boxer, “he suggested the southpaw stance and asked me if it felt right. I said ‘yes’ and I’ve continued like that ever since.”
The experiment bore fruit immediately, first as an amateur, Machado was a national champion at Junior, Junior Olympics, Cadet and Adult categories. Then as a professional, Machado went straight to the 126 pound division with Jim Pagán, at the Parcelas Falú Gymnasium.
On February 6, 2016, Machado was the main event for a Roc Nation and Miguel Cotto Promotions event in Puerto Rico. Machado scored a first round knockout of experienced boxer Jose Luis Araiza. He fought three more fights in 2016, and won two by TKO and one by KO.
He fought in April 2017 against Juan Jose Martinez and won the WBO NABO super featherweight title by TKO. In August, he beat Carlos Morales by Unanimous Decision, and in late October, he knocked out Jezreel Corrales.
