Gerald Washington In the Lead To Sub In For Deontay Wilder Fight

Gerald Washington is in the lead to sub in against Deontay Wilder on Feb 25 in a Wilder WBC title defense in Alabama and to run on Fox.

Word dropped on Tuesday that Wilder foe Andrzej Wawrzyk tested positive for a banned substance and is thus disqualified from taking the gig. The WBC does the most stringent testing among all the sanctioning bodies and oversight organizations. I asked their president Mauricio Sulaiman for specifics.

What can you tell me about the substance, when the test was performed and status of B sample, if it too came up positive?

“It was two separate tests from January 15 and January 16 . The fighter has the option to open sample B,” Sulaiman told me.

The steroid stanozolol was the forbidden ingredient flagged.

Back to the sub-in…”Everyone ranked is being considered,” our source with intimate knowledge of the situation told us, but the 18-0-1 Washington is now the lead dog in this PBC event.

He’s a 34 year old California based boxer who last fought in July 2016, stopping Ray Austin.

Arguably, he’s actually a step up from the Pole, on paper. He’s rated No 10 by the WBC as of now.
