New York City (October 16, 2015) – After a very successful weigh in ticket giveaway, the Madison Square Garden Theater was packed with fans looking to get pictures and autographs of their favorite boxers. The atmosphere was electric with fans from all over the world chanting down to the boxers as they prepared to weigh in.
First to the stage was the middleweight match up of Eamonn O’Kane (14-1-1) and Tureano Johnson (18-1). O’Kane stepped up to the scale first and came in at exactly 160 pounds before yelling loudly to his fans in the stands that could make the trip. Johnson followed O’Kane with the weight of 159.4 pounds. Johnson after his weigh in stated “Eamonn is going to be like all my other opponets, and I put them to sleep.” O’Kane had other ideas when he spoke next, saying to the crowd “I am in the best shape of my life, and I will be going to sleep whenever it’s my bedtime” as his hometown fans erupted with applause.
The next weigh in involved two large heavyweights in Luis Ortiz and Matias Ariel Vidondo. This bout will be for the interim WBA World heavyweight title and is a scheduled 12 round bout. First up to the scales was Vidondo who weighed in at a very large 261 pounds. The Argentinian fighter, however, will have his hands full with a lighter undefeated Luis Ortiz who hit the scale at 237.8 pounds. “He wants to fight the best right now” Ortiz’s translator stated. “His hands will definitely be doing the talking, and it will be a KO” Ortiz said with confidence. A much more humble Vidondo isn’t looking at this fight as work. “I’m going to enjoy the experience” Vidondo said about being able to fight in a venue like Madison Square Garden in front of 20,000 people.
The next match up to take the stage is a highly anticipated featherweight bout between the undefeated and newly voted #1 pound-for-pound fighter Ramon “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and Brian Viloria. Viloria hit the scale at 111.4 pounds, while Chocolatito matched that and also weighed in at 111.4 pounds. “I’m dedicating this fight to god” a soft spoken Chocolatito said. “It’s a dream come true to fight at Madison Square Garden where legends have fought” Chcoolatito said while taking in the atmosphere and waving to his fans who came out by the dozens. Viloria, on the other hand, assured the fans that even though he may be considered the underdog, he has a lot to prove. “This is a perfect fight for me” Viloria said. “I’m going to lay it all out, let my hands go, and let it fly” an energized Viloria said to the crowd as fans cheered him on.
And now, after the three other weigh ins, we finally hit the main event. The fight that brought in hundreds of fans off the streets to witness the great Gennady “GGG” Golovkin weigh in against David Lemieux. First to the scale was David Lemieux, the current IBF middleweight world champion. Lemieux weighed in at 159.8 pounds, taking off every ounce of clothing to get him there. Next up was GGG who received a large applaud from the crowd. GGG weighed in at 159.4 pounds, just .4 pounds lighter than Lemieux. “It will be an amazing day tomorrow” a smiling GGG said to the crowd. The soft spoken GGG didn’t have much to say other than wishing Lemieux luck, and leaving the stage. Lemieux, on the other hand, informed the fans that we will be seeing the best David Lemieux we’ve ever seen tomorrow night. “It’s a great success to have all these people here cheering for us” Lemieux stated. “I don’t want to disappoint the fans, and I will be leaving this place with those belts” a confident Lemieux said before exiting the stage.
