On This Day: Rocky Marciano Debut

On this day 69 years ago, undefeated World heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano took the ring for the first time as a professional fighter against Lee Epperson. The fight, which took place at Valley Arena in Holyoke, Massachusetts, ended in a 3rd round knockout for Marciano. The fight was scheduled for 4 rounds, but ended one round short with the KO.

As we all know, Marciano went on the complete an undefeated 49-0 record with 43 knockouts. The 49-0 mark is still the record for most wins without a loss in modern day boxing with only Floyd Mayweather tying with him.

Marciano retired at the age of 31 from boxing even though some believe he could have kept fighting and set that record even higher. Marciano claimed he wanted to spend more time with his family. Happy Anniversary to the beginning of a great and long career for Rocky Marciano!
