Rochester Boxer Fights for Middleweight Championship of the World in London, England on September 16th

Rochester, NY- Rochester’s own Willie “El Mongoose” Monroe Jr. (21-2-0) will fight for the WBO middleweight championship of the world when he faces the current champion, Billy Joe Saunders (24-0-0) at the Copper Box Arena in London, England on September 16th, 2017.

“I am happy for this World Title opportunity,” said Monroe Jr. “I’m always in the gym and I’m ready to go now; I live the life. I can’t wait to show up and show out in London. Saunders is a good fighter and a worthy World Champion but I’m coming for that belt.

“I gave a good account of myself against Golovkin but I will admit that I got caught up in the moment. Billy Joe has had a lot of luxuries throughout his career that I haven’t had. All of his fights have been here in his own backyard, he hasn’t had to go into the Lion’s Den to prove himself. He calls me mentally weak but we’ll see on September 16th.”

Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren said: “Bill will have to be at the very top of his game to get the win on September 16th. The winner of this fight will have the missing piece on the Middleweight jigsaw, Canelo and Golovkin both want that WBO belt.

According to Monroe Jr. is currently ranked the #10 middleweight in the world and #3 in the United States.

Willie Monroe Jr. is a great community advocate and role model who gives of his time to speak to at-risk youth throughout the Rochester community and has always stayed close to his roots here in the Rochester area. He represents the “585” in every event he is showcased in.

He won ESPN’s 2014 Boxing Middleweight tournament, Boxcino, even when he was deemed an underdog. He exemplifies the true spirit of perseverance and takes pride in not only winning, but making sure the world knows there are many more in his Rochester, NY community overcoming many obstacles and succeeding at life.

Monroe Jr. most recently fought Gabriel Rosado in a one-sided unanimous decision fight which earned Monroe the vacant WBO Intercontinental Middleweight championship in front of a 51,000+ at AT&T Stadium in Dallas Texas. Boxing is in his blood and his great uncle Willie “The Worm” Monroe once beat the great Marvelous Marvin Hagler. The Monroe bloodline continues to produce champions and Willie “El Mongoose” Monroe Jr. is the next in line!
