“Novelty” fights, or the discussion of them, is a thing in the combat sports world these days.
No wonder, what with the reception that the Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor received. And by that, I mean the amount of money it generated…
So, no surprise that another “novelty” matchup is being talked about; this weekend, UFC ace Khabib Nurmagomedov talked to Floyd Mayweathers’ right hand man Leonard Ellerbe.
“Let’s go, Floyd, we have to fight now,” the Dagestan native said to the executive, in Russia to watch Andrew Tabiti. “50-0 vs. 27-0, two guys who never lose. Let’s go, why not? Because in the jungle, there’s only one king. Of course I’m the king because he cannot drop McGregor, but I drop him easily. Let’s go.”
We tend to think this is a trial balloon, or a relevance grabber. But who knows? Khabib seems not to be pleased with UFC after the MMA giant and the Nevada commission examined Khabib’s role in the melee following his beat-down of Conor McGregor. He hasn’t been cut his check yet, of $2 million, and today went on the record as being of the mind that the Conor attack on his bus in April was staged.
So, if you want to play the what if game…what if Floyd figured that the Khabib buzz could net him the sort of paycheck he craves, and he agreed to end his latest retirement with a fight against the man from Dagestan?
