Team Everlast athlete, Willie Monroe Jr. (21-2) is set to take on Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO World Middleweight title. These two southpaws will fight on September 16, 2017, the same day as Canelo VS GGG, at Copper Box Arena in London. Don’t worry, you will be able to watch both, due to the time difference!
Saunders called out Golovkin and was hoping to fight on June 10 in Golovkin’s native Kazakhstan, but that fight fell apart after Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) went 12 rounds for the first time in his career during a unanimous-decision victory over champion and #TeamEverlast athlete Daniel Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) on March 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Saunders was then supposed to make a mandatory defense of his WBO 160-pound championship against Avtandil Khurtsidze, but it was canceled because Khurtsidze (33-2-2, 22 KOs) was arrested and charged with being part of a Russian crime syndicate.
Saunders needed a new opponent, someone accomplished, and that’s where the #5 ranked middleweight, Willie Monroe Jr. came into the picture. Willie is known for his speed, endurance, good defense, and overall boxing skills. Team Monroe is excited and ready for the fight, especially after his last UD win over Rosado last September. Although it’s been a longer time out of the ring than Willie would prefer, Willie stays in fighting shape all year round. He says it’s his lifestyle. He has fought on short notice before, but this fight he will have a true fight camp. He flies out to London for the press conference this weekend.
Billy Joe Saunders will also be fighting after a near year-long layoff too, after winning against Artur Akavov in December. It is expected to be a competitive fight.
Stay tuned for updates on Willie’s camp here on #TeamEverlast!
See y’all 9/16 #AndTheNew
