VETERAN GETS KIDS OFF THE STREETS, INTO THE GYM AND ONTO A CAREER IN NEWARK, NJ, THROUGH IRONBOUND BOXING ACADEMY
New York, NY – Committed to bringing about positive social change and supporting the great work of veterans, Everlast has teamed up with Ironbound USA and its’ Ironbound Boxing Academy, a nonprofit boxing gym located in Newark, NJ, to make boxing a positive outlet for youth in lower-income neighborhoods. The social enterprise provides free classes and training while aiding in part-time employment, as assistant coaches and personal trainers within the Ironbound brand.
In early 2017, Mike Steadman, a Marine Corps Veteran, with partners, Gary Bloore and Keith Colon, launched the Ironbound Boxing Academy, in partnership with the City of Newark’s Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs (D.O.R.C.A). As a three-time National Collegiate Boxing Champion from the United States Naval Academy and Marine Corps Infantry Officer, with deployments to Afghanistan and Japan/Philippines, Mike credits boxing with giving him the skills to graduate from college and change the lives of others less fortunate.
“Ironbound USA is committed to bringing its programs to America’s toughest cities, in an effort to bring opportunity to youth and young adults who feel like they have none.” said Mike. “I am excited and grateful for the support of Everlast and aim to expand our Boxing Academies into the Bronx, North Philadelphia, Detroit and Baltimore within the next five years.”
Ironbound currently funds its altruistic Ironbound Academy by running boxing classes and corporate wellness initiatives for corporations, start-ups, and other small businesses. Everlast will help to bring quality equipment at no cost to these underprivileged youths, including outfitting Ironbound’s entire facility to help train and run classes.
“We are unbelievably excited to partner with Ironbound, says Chris Zoller, Vice President of Marketing at Everlast. The passion and drive Mike has for helping people is inspiring. We’re excited for the opportunity to partner and help Ironbound make a meaningful impact on people’s lives through sport.”
