On this day 43 years ago Joe Frazier and George Foreman entered the ring in what is now known as “The Sunshine Showdown.” This fight which took place in Jamaica was for the WBA, WBC and The Ring Heavyweight Championships. Frazier came into the fight with an undefeated 29-0 record going against Foreman’s perfect 37-0 record.
This fight would last less than two rounds with Foreman scoring a technical knockout at 1:35 of the second round to dethrone Frazier to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. During the fight, Foreman dominated Frazier scoring six knockdowns. In ABC’s television re-broadcast, Howard Cosell made the memorable call “Down Goes Frazier! Down Goes Frazier! Down Goes Frazier!” (see video below).
Foreman was in complete control of this fight scoring a knockdown within two minutes of the start of the fight with a right uppercut. Frazier was able to get back up but with seventeen seconds left in the round, Foreman scored another knockdown with another uppercut. With multiple people sitting ringside pleading to stop the fight, referee Arthur Mercante Sr. finally called the fight after the sixth knockdown and Foreman was declared the winner at 1:35 of the second round, making him the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
